“Every Day is Different”: Jason’s Journey as a Dad, Carer, and Business Founder

A picture of a family on a balcony
Meet Jason, a devoted dad of two, business founder, and full-time advocate – not just in his professional life, but at home, where the stakes are deeply personal.

Jason’s children, Isabelle (10) and Harry (6), are both autistic and have ADHD. That alone means no two days are ever quite the same. But for Jason and his wife, unpredictability has become a rhythm they’ve learned to dance with – early mornings, long days, and unwavering love guiding them through it all.

“Our day usually starts at 4:30 AM,” Jason shares. “Food is a challenge for both of them, so breakfast and packing lunchboxes can be a long negotiation. Even simple things like getting dressed or brushing teeth are a real struggle because of their sensory needs. It takes both of us to get them ready for the day ahead.”

Isabelle attends a specialist provision school and can’t manage the provided transport, so Jason drives her there himself. Meanwhile, his wife takes Harry to a small mainstream school. At pick-up time, the logistics often call for one parent to finish work early or a grandparent to step in.

“School is really tough for them. When they come home, they need to move. A lot. Our evenings are full of activity to help them release that tension. Then the bedtime routine starts around 7 PM. If we’re lucky, they’re asleep by 9:30.”

Wearing Many Hats: Dad, Carer, and Tech Leader

Jason is the founder of WestSpring IT, a forward-thinking tech company that doesn’t just innovate – it cares.

“Having flexibility in my work has been massive. It means I can attend EHCP meetings, handle the endless admin, search for sensory-friendly clothing, and just be there when my family needs me. That freedom is invaluable.”

WestSpring IT is also a Gold Kit Partner with Gympanzees, a partnership that reflects Jason’s personal and professional values: championing inclusion, supporting families of disabled children, and ensuring accessible exercise and play for all.

“Being able to align our business with something so close to home has been meaningful. Gympanzees has such an impact, and we’re proud to support their mission.”

Jason also draws strength from a network of other parent-carers he’s met through Gympanzees.

“Talking to people who get it – without needing a full explanation – is such a relief. That shared understanding makes a huge difference.”

But even with the right support, the emotional load is constant.

“There’s always guilt. When I walk out the door for work or take a call while I’m with the kids – it’s tough. Even when they’re in school, I’m thinking: Did we pack the comfort toy? Did we forget something? Are they okay?”

And because Isabelle and Harry’s needs shift day by day, planning is a challenge.

“What worked yesterday might not work today. That’s just the reality we live in.”

Many UK families are still navigating daily challenges with limited support.

Jason knows his situation is unique – and that not every parent-carer has the freedom or workplace understanding he’s been able to build. But he believes change is possible.

“There’s still a long way to go in how UK employers support families like ours. It starts with education – understanding disability, knowing how to have the conversation, and realising the emotional toll many families are under.”

Between funding gaps, school placement struggles, and the demands of care, families are stretched thin.

Employers could make a world of difference if they’re willing to listen.

That’s why Jason is proud to support Gympanzees’ latest crowdfunder to create a permanent home.

“A permanent Gympanzees centre won’t just support children like Isabelle and Harry – it will support parents too. Having a safe, understanding, and stimulating space for the kids to thrive gives families some breathing room, some connection, and a moment to reset. That’s life changing.”

Jason’s Advice to Other Working Parent-Carers

His message to others walking the same path is honest and heartfelt:

“Find others who understand – you are not alone. Just talking to someone who gets it can be such a release. Speak to your employer, your colleagues. Keep pushing and keep fighting for what your family needs. It’s exhausting, but it matters. And it’s never, ever unnoticed.”

Jason’s story shows that work and family don’t have to exist in conflict. With the right support, they can empower each other and build a future where all families feel seen, supported, and included.
